Vatican Expresses Solidarity Calling for Unity and Healing at Guinea-Bissau After Bafatá Fire

The Vatican has expressed sorrow and solidarity with Guinea-Bissau after the tragic fire in Bafatá. The message was sent by the Dicastery for the Service of Integral Human Development to Bishop Vítor Luís Quematcha, of the Diocese of Bafatá.

What the Vatican said

In its letter, the Vatican said it followed the tragedy with “pain and concern”. It also praised local Church efforts that encourage dialogue and social reconciliation. The note highlighted Lent as a time for fraternity, which this year coincides with Ramadan for many communities.

Bafatá fire updates

Early medical reports counted 163 people injured, including severe burn cases. Initial updates confirmed at least one death, and later reports indicated the toll rose further. Authorities linked the incident to a fuel container in a residential area, and later moved to curb similar risks.

A delicate national context

The Vatican letter also noted a particularly sensitive social and political moment in the country. Guinea-Bissau entered a transition after a military takeover in late 2025, with an electoral process interrupted. International reporting has described a transitional framework and an election timetable set for December 2026.
